Camera setup guide

Connect ZR Ctl to your Nikon ZR.

Pick the same transport in the app and on the camera. USB is the clean wired path, Wi-Fi Search works on a router or iPhone Personal Hotspot, and AP Direct joins the camera's own network when there is no router nearby.

ZR Ctl connection page showing transport selection and reconnect options

In ZR Ctl: open Connection, then choose the same path you set up on the camera.

Choose A Transport

Four setup paths, one control surface.

USB uses MTP/PTP, Wi-Fi Search uses a router or your iPhone hotspot, and AP Direct uses the camera's own network.

Camera Setup

Follow the path you want to use.

These instructions match the transport names in ZR Ctl, the Nikon ZR network menu, and the iPhone hotspot path.

USB / Cable

Use MTP/PTP, then connect with a data cable.

USB is the cleanest wired path. The important part is putting the camera in the USB mode ZR Ctl can control, then using a cable that carries data.

  1. Set the camera USB mode.

On the ZR, open Menu > Network menu > USB, then choose MTP/PTP.

  2. Avoid the other USB modes for app control.

Do not choose iPhone or USB streaming (UVC/UAC) when you want ZR Ctl camera control. Those modes are for other workflows.

  3. Protect the phone battery if needed.

To avoid the camera pulling power from the iPhone over USB-C, set Setup menu > USB power delivery > OFF. Keep USB itself set to MTP/PTP.

  4. Connect with a USB-C data cable.

Use a cable that supports data. A charge-only cable can power the camera without exposing it to iOS or Android as a controllable camera.

  5. Dismiss camera import screens.

If the camera shows an upload-priority screen, half-press the shutter to exit. If the phone opens Photos, Files, or an import view, back out and return to ZR Ctl.

  6. Connect from ZR Ctl.

Open Connection and tap USB / Cable. On iPhone or iPad, allow Camera permission if iOS asks.

Wi-Fi / Search

Put the camera and device on the same Wi-Fi network.

This is the best wireless option when you have a stable router, studio network, or production Wi-Fi. ZR Ctl searches the current network for the camera.

  1. Join the phone or tablet to the Wi-Fi network.

Connect the device running ZR Ctl to the router, studio network, or production Wi-Fi you want the ZR to use.

  2. Set the ZR connection type.

On the camera, open Menu > Network menu > Connect to computer > Connection type, then choose Camera control.

  3. Create a camera network profile.

Go to Connect to computer > Network settings > Create profile. You can keep the default profile name or rename it.

  4. Choose the same Wi-Fi network.

Select Search for Wi-Fi network, pick the same SSID your phone or tablet is using, then enter the Wi-Fi password on the camera.

  5. Let the camera obtain an IP address.

Use automatic IP assignment unless your network requires manual addressing. Finish the profile when the camera reports configuration complete.

  6. Search from ZR Ctl.

Return to the app and tap Wi-Fi / Search. When the camera appears under discovered cameras, select it.

  7. Confirm pairing if the camera asks.

On a first connection or fresh install, the camera may show an authentication prompt. Confirm it, then enter the code in ZR Ctl if requested.

iPhone Hotspot

Use your iPhone as the network.

This is a router-style wireless setup without carrying a router. The ZR joins the iPhone's Personal Hotspot, then ZR Ctl searches that hotspot network for the camera.

  1. Turn on the iPhone hotspot.

On the iPhone running ZR Ctl, open Settings > Personal Hotspot, or Settings > Cellular > Personal Hotspot, then turn on Allow Others to Join.

  2. Use a camera-friendly name and password.

The ZR will join the hotspot like normal Wi-Fi. If needed, simplify the iPhone name in Settings > General > About > Name, then use an easy-to-type hotspot password.

  3. Keep the hotspot screen open while the ZR joins.

Leave the iPhone on the Personal Hotspot screen until the camera connects. This makes the hotspot easier for non-Apple devices to see.

  4. Set the ZR connection type.

On the camera, open Menu > Network menu > Connect to computer > Connection type, then choose Camera control.

  5. Create a Search network profile.

Go to Connect to computer > Network settings > Create profile, choose Search for Wi-Fi network, then select the iPhone hotspot name.

  6. Enter the hotspot password on the camera.

Use automatic IP assignment unless you have a specific reason to set an address manually. Finish the profile when the camera reports the Wi-Fi link is complete.

  7. Connect from ZR Ctl with Wi-Fi / Search.

Return to ZR Ctl, open Connection, and tap Wi-Fi / Search. Choose the discovered camera when it appears.

  8. Authenticate if prompted.

If the camera asks to pair or shows an authentication code, confirm on the camera and continue in ZR Ctl.

AP / Direct

Let the camera create the Wi-Fi network.

AP Direct is the field option. The ZR creates its own network, the phone or tablet joins it, and ZR Ctl connects to the camera at the direct address.

  1. Use Connect to computer, not smart device.

ZR Ctl uses the camera-control computer path. On the camera, start from Menu > Network menu > Connect to computer.

  2. Set the connection type to Camera control.

Open Connection type, then choose Camera control before creating the network profile.

  3. Create a direct profile.

Go to Network settings > Create profile, then choose Direct connection to computer.

  4. Join the camera's Wi-Fi network.

The ZR will show a network name and password. On the phone or tablet, open system Wi-Fi settings and join that network.

  5. Return to ZR Ctl.

Open Connection and tap AP / Direct. The app will try the direct camera address, 192.168.1.1.

  6. Authenticate if prompted.

If the camera asks to pair or authenticate, confirm on the camera and continue in ZR Ctl.

  7. Expect no internet during direct mode.

The device is joined to the camera, not a router. If live view is choppy, stay close to the camera or lower preview resolution/quality in Advanced > Preview.

Connection Checks

The usual fixes before a long reset.

Most failed connections come from a transport mismatch, a stale camera network session, or the device being on the wrong Wi-Fi.

The camera is in a different transport mode

The ZR can grey out Wi-Fi/AP options while USB MTP/PTP is active. If you switch from USB to wireless, disconnect or end the current camera connection first.

The app cannot discover the camera

For Wi-Fi Search, both devices must be on the same local network. If discovery still fails, use Advanced Tools and connect by IP.

The camera cannot see the iPhone hotspot

Keep the iPhone on the Personal Hotspot screen, confirm Allow Others to Join is on, simplify the hotspot name or password if needed, then run the camera's Search for Wi-Fi network step again.

The camera asks for an authentication code

That is normal on first pairing or after a fresh install. Confirm the camera prompt, then enter the code ZR shows in the app.

Live view feels slower in AP mode

Direct camera Wi-Fi has less headroom than a strong router or USB connection. Move closer to the camera or lower Preview Resolution and Preview Quality.
