Chapter 19

Glossary.

Every term the app and this manual use, in one or two sentences each. Terms shown in capitals are on-screen tool names.

A to F

AF area mode
Which part of the frame the camera's autofocus looks at: a single point, a wide zone, the whole frame with subject detection, or a tracked subject.
AF mode
How the autofocus behaves: AF-S focuses once, AF-C keeps refocusing, AF-F (full-time) refocuses continuously in video, MF leaves focus to the lens ring.
Analyze Pre-LUT
The app's rule that scopes, zebras and false color read the camera signal before the monitoring LUT is applied, so a look cannot hide clipping.
Anamorphic
A lens that squeezes a wide view onto the sensor horizontally. The recorded image must be stretched back out (desqueezed) by the squeeze factor, commonly 1.33x, 1.5x, 1.8x or 2x.
AP mode (camera Wi-Fi)
The camera creates its own Wi-Fi network and the phone joins it. Works anywhere but has the least bandwidth and takes the phone off the internet.
Aperture
The adjustable opening in the lens, written as an f-number. Lower numbers let in more light and blur the background more.
Attenuator
A fixed pad on the audio input that lowers a loud source before it can clip the camera's preamp.
Base ISO (native ISO)
The ISO at which a sensor delivers its cleanest image and widest dynamic range. See dual base ISO.
Bit depth
How many brightness steps a file stores per channel: 8-bit is 256, 10-bit is 1024, 12-bit is 4096. Log footage needs at least 10-bit to grade without banding.
Bonjour
Apple's name for automatic discovery of devices on a local network. The app uses it to find Nikon cameras on Wi-Fi and to find Remote Viewer hosts.
Bulb / Time
Long-exposure modes for stills. Bulb exposes while the release is held; Time opens on one press and closes on the next.
CAST (Remote Viewer)
Share the Live View picture with other phones and tablets on the same network as read-only monitors.
Clipping
When a signal exceeds the maximum the file can store. Clipped highlights are solid white with no detail; clipped audio distorts.
Code value
The integer stored for a pixel's brightness, 0 to 255 in 8-bit or 0 to 1023 in 10-bit. Scopes convert these to IRE.
Codec
The compression format of a video file, such as H.264, H.265 (HEVC), ProRes, N-RAW, ProRes RAW or R3D.
COMP (composition guides)
Overlay grids such as rule of thirds, golden ratio, golden triangles, diagonals, centre cross and safe areas.
Conform (playback speed)
Playing a clip at a different frame rate than it was recorded, for example a 120 fps clip at 24 fps to see the slow motion.
.cube
The common text file format for 3D LUTs. The app imports .cube files into its LUT library.
dBFS
Decibels relative to full scale, the unit of digital audio level. 0 dBFS is the loudest possible value; dialogue usually peaks around −12 to −6 dBFS.
Deep Scan
A read-only capability scan of the connected camera used for support. It changes no settings.
DSQ (desqueeze)
Stretching the monitor image horizontally by the anamorphic squeeze factor so it shows the real frame.
Depth of field
The range of distances that appear sharp. It shrinks with wider apertures, longer lenses and closer subjects.
Drop frame
A timecode counting scheme for 29.97 and 59.94 fps that skips numbers so timecode stays in step with real time. Not used at 24, 25 or 30 fps.
Dual base ISO
A sensor with two native ISOs, a low base for bright scenes and a high base for dark ones. The Nikon ZR exposes the choice in R3D.
Dynamic Island / Live Activity
iPhone's Lock Screen and top-of-screen status area. The app shows the recording timer, long-exposure and timelapse progress there.
EV / exposure compensation
A stop of exposure. Exposure compensation shifts an automatic exposure by a chosen number of stops in thirds.
EXPO (Exposure Assist)
The tool pill that shows X-Lights and X-Posts.
FALSE (false color)
Replaces the picture with a colour per exposure band so every region's level is visible at once. The app offers five palettes.
f-number / f-stop
The aperture setting. Each full stop (1.4, 2, 2.8, 4, 5.6, 8, 11, 16, 22) halves the light.
Focus Punch
The camera's own magnification of the Live View image for checking focus, using the camera's zoom steps.
Focus pull
Moving focus from one subject to another during a shot. PULL does it between saved AF points; MF does it between saved lens positions.
Focus stacking
Shooting several frames at stepped focus distances to blend later for extended depth of field.
FRME (frame guides)
Outlines of a delivery aspect ratio over the picture, with an optional matte outside them.
Frame rate (fps)
Frames recorded per second. 24 for cinema, 25 and 30 for television, 50 to 120 for slow motion.
Free Run
Timecode that advances continuously whether or not the camera is recording, usually set to time of day.

The first-generation Nikon Z cameras (Z5, Z6, Z7, Z50), which use an older control protocol. The app connects to them with a reduced control set.
Group record
Starting and stopping every camera in Multicam together, with learned per-camera start latency so they begin as close to the same instant as possible.
HDMI capture card (UVC)
A USB device that turns an HDMI output into a webcam-style video stream. On USB-C iPads and Macs the app can use one as the picture source while the camera stays connected over Wi-Fi.
Headroom
The gap between the loudest expected audio peak and 0 dBFS, left so surprises do not clip.
HEVC / H.265
A video codec with roughly half the file size of H.264 at the same quality. Available in 8-bit and 10-bit on Nikon bodies.
HLG
Hybrid Log-Gamma, an HDR profile that looks more finished than log but still keeps extended highlight range.

Metering mode
Which part of the frame the camera's light meter weighs: matrix (whole frame), centre-weighted, spot, or highlight-weighted.
MF (Manual Focus Drive)
Driving the lens's focus motor from the app in small steps, saving In and Out positions, and pulling between them over a chosen time.
Middle grey

REF (reference frame)
A captured still of the picture shown as a ghost over the live image, for matching framing between shots or days.
Release mode
What one press of the shutter does for stills: single frame, continuous low or high, self-timer, or high-speed frame capture.
Remote Mode (Zf, Zfc)
A camera setting on dial-based bodies that lets the app's exposure values override the physical dials.
Safe area
Inset guides (action safe, title safe) that keep important content away from edges that some screens crop.

SeeMo
Accsoon's HDMI-to-iPhone adapter. The app can use its 1080p picture as the monitor while controlling the Nikon over Wi-Fi.
Shutter angle
Exposure time expressed as a fraction of the frame interval. 180° is half the interval and the normal cinema setting.
Skin line
The diagonal on a vectorscope where all human skin tones fall. Faces off the line mean a white balance or tint error.
SLOW
One-tap switch to a saved slow-motion frame size and rate, and back.
Subject detection
The camera's recognition of people, animals, vehicles, birds or aircraft for autofocus.
