Chapter 04

Supported cameras.

The app speaks Nikon's control protocol and RED's RCP2. Every Nikon Z body connects, but what the camera reports decides which tiles and tools you get, so two bodies can look a little different. This chapter lists the bodies and the differences you will notice.

Nikon Z

Bodies fall into three groups by the control set their firmware exposes.

Modern bodies

ZR, Z8, Z9, Z6III, Zf, Z5II, Z5IIC and Z50II. These expose the full video control set: codec, frame size and rate, shutter angle where the body has it, movie AF speed and apply, subject detection, audio and timecode tiles, Focus Punch and the other camera-side tools.

BodyNotes
ZRThe primary target. The only body with R3D, Dual Base ISO and the extended ISO and audio gain controls. Tested extensively over USB and Wi-Fi. In R3D the automatic white balance modes and Electronic VR are hidden because the camera refuses them, and ISO locks while recording.
Z8, Z9Shutter angle, 8K and RAW formats. Tested over USB and Wi-Fi (Z8) and USB (Z9). RAW frame sizes are labelled with exact pixel sizes because several share a bucket.
Z6IIIShutter angle. Tested over USB and Wi-Fi. The exposure mode is set on the camera's dial.
Zf, ZfcDial-based bodies. In their normal remote mode the camera refuses exposure changes from an app; turn on Remote Mode (Controls, or Connection › Advanced) so the app's values win and the dials are ignored. Wi-Fi Live View is slower on these bodies; prefer USB.
Z5II, Z5IICVideo and photo over USB reported working. The first command after plugging in can take a while; the app waits for it.
Z50IIUSB Live View, exposure, tap AF and stills confirmed in the field. One iPhone and Z50II combination never showed the camera over USB until USB permissions were reset; that reset is now offered inline on the failure card.

Second-generation bodies

Z6II, Z7II, Zfc and Z30 connect over USB, Wi-Fi and the camera's network with a reduced control set: the modern movie tiles (codec, AF speed, audio, timecode) are hidden unless the body reports them. Tint is not accepted on the Z7II. These are best-effort bodies; monitoring and the basic exposure controls work.

First-generation bodies

Z5, Z6, Z7 and Z50 use an older session mode. USB Live View is confirmed on the Z6 and Z50. Recording and playback need the camera in its application mode, which the app now switches on when you first record New in 2.1; a one-time tip asks you to set the selector to video. Treat these as monitoring-first bodies.

RED

KOMODO, KOMODO-X, V-RAPTOR and V-RAPTOR XL over Wi-Fi or a USB-C network tether; the original KOMODO needs RED's Link Adapter for the tether. Field evidence so far is from KOMODO-X on Wi-Fi; see RED cameras for the control set and limits. DSMC2 and older bodies are not supported.

Other brands

Sony, Fujifilm, Canon and Panasonic are not supported. There is no third-party way to control them from this app at present.

A Nikon on USB turns its own Wi-Fi off, so the Wi-Fi routes are unavailable while the cable is in.
