Chapter 16

RED cameras.

The app controls RED KOMODO, KOMODO-X and V-RAPTOR bodies over RED's RCP2 protocol and monitors their live picture with every tool. This chapter covers what is different from a Nikon.

BodiesKOMODO, KOMODO-X, V-RAPTOR and V-RAPTOR XL families. Not DSMC2 or older
LinkWi-Fi, or a USB-C network tether (the original KOMODO needs the KOMODO Link Adapter)
EvidenceBuilt against RED's protocol; field reports are from KOMODO-X on Wi-Fi. Test your body before a shoot

Connecting

  1. Put the RED on the network

Either join the RED's Wi-Fi (or put the RED on the same network as the phone), or plug the USB-C tether in. The app prefers the wired path when both exist.

  2. Search

On the Connection page tap RED ยท USB-C / Wi-Fi (Pro mode) or let Simple mode find it. The app probes the local subnet for RED's control port; no address is typed.

  3. Connect

The row takes the camera's name; tap it. Connecting a RED disconnects any Nikon, and the reverse, outside Multicam.

The Connection page then shows the RED section with Open RED Controls and Disconnect. There is no manual IP entry for RED, and only one RED session at a time.

Controls

The Controls page shows RED tiles whose option lists come from the camera's own firmware, so they match what the camera menu offers. A tile is read only when the camera reports no list, and shows "Waiting for RED camera confirmation" while a change is pending.

TileSets
ApertureLens iris on electronic lenses.
Angle / ShutterShutter angle, or integration time, whichever the body reports first.
ISOISO.
NDThe built-in ND filter.
Kelvin, TintWhite balance.
Sensor FPS, Project FPSCapture rate and timeline rate.
Format, Codec, R3D QualityRecord format, codec and R3D compression.
Live StreamThe JPEG quality of the live-stream picture the camera sends the phone.

The record card shows READY or RECORDING, the camera's timecode and MEDIA n% REMAINING. The status strip shows the battery percentage. The Focus section and the Audio / TC group are not shown for RED.

Live View

LUTs and Log View

RED cameras can apply their own look to the live stream. To avoid applying two looks, turning on an app LUT saves the camera's state, enables Log View and turns the camera's LUT off, so the app's LUT and tools see the log picture. Turning the app LUT off, or disconnecting, restores the camera's settings. The bundled IPP2 Rec709 and RED Creative folders are built for RED's Log3G10. See LUTs and looks.

Multicam

A connected RED appears as a tile beside the Nikon bodies, joins group record, takes ISO, shutter, aperture, Kelvin and tint from the shared rail, and receives the timecode jam as a manual internal value. The RED's REC RUN or FREE RUN mode cannot be set over the protocol; set it on the camera. See Multicam.

Playback remote

With a RED connected, the Playback page lists the camera's clips (name, duration, format, compression, start timecode) and plays them through the camera's own decoder, streaming the result to the phone. Controls: previous clip, back 24 frames, play/pause, forward 24 frames, next clip, refresh. Nothing is downloaded and R3D files cannot be transferred, deleted or exported from the phone. If the firmware does not expose playback control the page says so.
