Chapter 02

Known issues.

What we know is broken, what is already fixed in the next release, and what is a limitation rather than a bug. Updated 18 October 2026 against Parallax Monitor 2.0 (32) on the App Store and the 2.1 TestFlight builds, and ZR Ctl 2.1.7 on Google Play.

How to read this page

Each item names the versions it applies to, a workaround where one exists, and whether a fix is shipping. If you hit something that is not listed, send logs from the Connection page right after it happens; that is how most of these were found.

Fixed in 2.1 (still present in 2.0 on the App Store)

If you are on 2.0 and see one of these, the fix is in 2.1. Until then, use the workaround.

IssueAffectsWorkaround on 2.0
Zf and Zfc refuse ISO, shutter and exposure changes from the appZf, ZfcSet exposure on the camera's dials. 2.1 adds a Remote Mode tile and a prompt that lets the app's values win.
Recording from the app is refused on Z5, Z6, Z7 and Z50First-generation Z bodiesRecord on the camera. 2.1 puts the camera into its application mode on the first attempt and explains any refusal.
Tap focus and the MF slider do nothing on older Z bodiesZ5, Z6, Z7, Z6II, Z7II, Z50, Z30, ZfcFocus on the camera. Fixed in 2.1 (40): these bodies send Live View data in an older format the app now reads.
After Focus Pull, taps stop focusing in AF-S, and a pull from AF-S does not move the lensAll Nikon bodiesSet the camera to AF-F before using Focus Pull, or toggle Touch AF off and on. Fixed in 2.1 (39).
Desqueeze with Fast GPU Display shows the LUT picture at the squeezed width with black bars, and peaking smears the edgesAnamorphic usersTurn off Fast GPU Display in Advanced › Monitoring (called Metal Monitor Rendering in 2.0). Fixed in 2.1 (35).
The app freezes, and sometimes quits, while starting a USB connectionUSB on some iPhonesPlug the cable in before opening the Connection page. Fixed in 2.1 (34).
Leaving the app while recording over USB could lose the take's connectionUSBKeep the app in the foreground while recording. 2.1 keeps the session untouched while rolling and shows a clear alert if iOS drops USB anyway.
A USB cable drop kicks you out of Live ViewUSBReconnect from the Connection page. 2.1 holds the last frame and reconnects by itself when not recording.
Lock Screen recording timer shows a wildly wrong timeLive ActivitiesIgnore the Lock Screen timer; the in-app timer is right. Fixed in 2.1 (37), which also adds card time left.

Open issues

These are under investigation or waiting for device confirmation. Where a workaround exists it is listed.

Connection

Z50II never appears over USB on one iPhone

iOS on one tester's iPhone never shows the Z50II as a USB camera at all, while the same body works on other phones. The cause looks like a stale iOS permission for the camera. Workaround: tap Reset USB Permissions on the failure card (inline from 2.1; under Connection › Advanced › USB PERMISSIONS in 2.0), then reconnect. Also try with USB power delivery off on the camera.

Brief USB disconnects on the ZR during Live View

Some ZR users see the camera drop off USB for a moment during Live View. 2.1 (39) reconnects automatically when not recording, so the symptom is now a short freeze rather than a lost session. The root cause is still being investigated with cable, hub and power-delivery evidence. Workaround: turn off USB power delivery on the camera, connect directly without a hub, and send logs when it happens.

Hotspot pairing aborts with "Wi-Fi network changed"

On an iPhone Personal Hotspot, the first-time pairing can be aborted by the app half a second after the camera shows its code, because the phone's network path flips while the hotspot bridge comes up. Workaround: pair the camera once over USB or the camera's own Wi-Fi, or retry the hotspot pairing a second time; later connections do not need to pair.

After a Wi-Fi disconnect, a camera that was then switched off can remain in the found list. The app never dials a stale entry (it searches again instead), but the list can mislead. Workaround: tap the Wi-Fi row again to start a fresh search.

Camera Wi-Fi: "not reachable while opening the connection"

Occasionally the phone reports it is on the camera's network but the route to 192.168.1.1 is not ready when the app connects. Workaround: wait for the Wi-Fi tick in Settings, come back to the app, and tap Camera Wi-Fi again.

Some routers block the discovery traffic the app uses. Workaround: type the camera's address under Connection › Advanced › Manual IP (the camera shows it under Connect to computer › Network settings), or use the iPhone hotspot.

Multicam

Previews freeze when recording starts and do not resume iOS

With two Nikon bodies over Wi-Fi, both tiles can show "Preview paused; recording protected" as soon as group record starts and stay frozen after it stops, while settings, timecode and record control keep working. The recording itself is not affected. Workaround: after the stop, tap LIVE on a tile and return to the grid, or disconnect and reconnect the cameras. Under investigation with priority.

A camera that is already recording cannot join the grid, and leaving the grid drops it Android

Reported on ZR Ctl 2.1.7 with three Z6III over router Wi-Fi: a body that starts recording on its own before the app connects shows a connection error in Multicam, and promoting or returning can drop its session. iOS behaviour is being checked. Workaround: connect every camera in Multicam before anyone presses record, and start recording from the group button.

Renaming a camera in Multicam is not available

The rename sheet exists but cannot be opened from a tile in the current build. Cameras keep their model names. Reordering by drag works.

Live View and tools

Desqueeze on the ZR in R3D looks wrong, or video mode only shrinks the picture

Two reports: in R3D the 1.33x desqueeze appears to stretch the wrong axis, and on one iPhone Air the video-mode desqueeze only made the picture smaller. The second matches the Fast GPU Display bug fixed in 2.1 (35); the R3D report is still being reproduced. Workaround on 2.0: turn off Fast GPU Display. If the R3D case persists on 2.1, send logs with the lens and format.

LUT Match cannot be turned off

The MATCH panel has no off switch, and its Reset leaves Contrast at 1.12 rather than 1.00, so a LUT is always shown with a slight contrast boost unless you change it. Workaround: set Contrast to 1.00 with Exposure 0.00 and Gamma 1.00 for the LUT exactly as delivered. A proper off switch is planned.

Focus Punch appears to do nothing

On the ZR, Z8, Z6III, Z5II and Z50II the camera refuses its magnifier while recording N-RAW, ProRes RAW or R3D, and on 2.0 the app did not say so. 2.1 shows "not during RAW" in the Zoom Mode menu and a notice when it is refused. Workaround: use Monitor Punch (LOCAL) while recording RAW.

Tap focus is abrupt and ignores the AF speed

An Instant tap drives the autofocus like a half-press, which ignores the movie AF speed. 2.1 (39) makes taps follow the camera's AF mode: in AF-C and AF-F a tap moves the point and the camera racks at your AF Speed (Cinematic). On 2.0, set Touch Focus to Cinematic on the Controls page.

Z8 over camera Wi-Fi: record start refused with "InvalidStatus"

The camera reported a recording prohibition (usually zoom active, card, or the selector not on video) and 2.0 retried without explaining. 2.1 shows the reason under the record card. Workaround: clear the condition on the camera, most often exit the camera's magnifier.

Long monitoring sessions drain the battery and run the phone warm

Continuous Live View with several overlays is heavy work for the phone, and charging the camera over USB makes it worse. Not a single bug, but a known cost; see Battery and heat for what helps. The experiment to match the preview rate to the camera's frame rate showed no saving and was removed.

HDMI capture at 50p looks brighter in the shadows than 25p iPad

One capture card decodes the two rates with different levels. The automatic colour match in 2.1 (38) may remove the difference; this is unverified. Workaround: judge exposure with the scopes, which read the camera's signal, not the card's.

Layout on the first-generation iPhone SE and other small screens

On a 4-inch screen the main title can wrap vertically and some landscape layouts are tight. Small-screen layout work is on the list. Workaround: use the Minimal preset and Icons Only.

Playback

A clip stops after about two seconds

Reported on 2.0 with large clips from the ZR and Z8 over Wi-Fi: the clip starts, then stalls while small clips play fine. The 2.0 playback rebuild addressed most cases; it is still being watched. Workaround: play over USB, or wait for the cache bar under the scrubber to fill before scrubbing.

The rating filter waits forever for photos rated in the camera

Ratings set on the camera are not the ratings the app filters by (the app's ratings live on the phone), and selecting a rating filter on a card with camera-rated photos can leave the view loading. Workaround: rate in the app, or clear the filter.

The viewer does not always respect the image orientation against the device orientation. Workaround: rotate the phone to match the photo.

Limitations by design

These are not bugs. Some are camera or platform limits, some are deliberate choices.

Reporting something new

Send logs from the Connection page right after the problem, with the camera, firmware, route and what you expected. Feature requests go through the feedback form. Requests already on the list include measuring and selecting white balance presets, a subtler peaking style, a meter-mode readout in the top bar, writing ratings to the card, AF-ON style function buttons, DSMC2 support, and a settings backup that survives reinstalling.
