Chapter 18

Troubleshooting and FAQ.

The questions support answers most often, with the fix for each. If yours is not here, send logs from the Connection page right after the problem happens and describe what you expected.

Connecting

The app says iOS hasn't detected the camera over USB

Nothing appeared on the cable. In order: unlock the phone and approve any Wired Accessories prompt; set the camera to Menu › Network › USB › MTP/PTP (not iPhone, not UVC/UAC streaming); use a cable that carries data, since charge-only cables power the camera but never show it; wake the camera and half-press the shutter to clear any pop-up; unplug and replug. If it keeps happening, turn off USB power delivery in the camera's Setup menu, and tap Reset USB Permissions on the failure card. On a Lightning iPhone you need Apple's powered Lightning to USB 3 Camera Adapter.

Wi-Fi search finds nothing

Both devices must be on the same network, and the camera must have a Connect to computer profile with Camera control as the connection type, connected (shown green on the camera). End any current camera connection and start the profile again. Check Settings › Privacy › Local Network › Parallax Monitor is on. If a router blocks discovery, type the camera's address under Connection › Advanced › Manual IP. A search stops after 20 seconds; tap again to retry.

The camera cannot see my iPhone hotspot

Keep the iPhone on the Personal Hotspot screen so it stays discoverable, with Allow Others to Join on. Leave Maximize Compatibility off; turn it on only if the camera cannot see the network at all, since it drops the hotspot to 2.4 GHz. Simplify the hotspot name and password if the camera's keyboard struggles with them, then run the camera's Search for Wi-Fi network step again.

The camera asks for a pairing code, or refuses the pairing

A code on first connection is normal. Confirm on the camera, check it matches the app and tap Accept; then wait while the camera restarts its Wi-Fi. If the camera refuses the pairing later, delete this device's connection profile on the camera, create it again and pair afresh.

I switched from USB to Wi-Fi and the Wi-Fi options are greyed out

A Nikon on USB turns its own Wi-Fi off, and the app disables the Wi-Fi rows while a camera is on the cable. Unplug the cable, then connect over Wi-Fi.

The app will not reconnect after the link dropped mid-recording

A Nikon that is recording refuses new connections, so the app does not try. The camera is still recording on its own. Stop it on the camera, then tap the route again. See Connection.

The Zf (or Zfc) ignores ISO and shutter changes from the app

Those bodies take exposure from their dials unless the camera is in Remote Mode. Tap the Remote Mode tile on Controls, or accept the "Turn On Remote Mode?" prompt. While it is on, the camera's dials are ignored.

The app opened the Files or Photos import screen when I plugged in

iOS offers a photo import for any camera. Back out and return to the app. If the camera shows an upload-priority screen, half-press the shutter to leave it.

Live View

Live View is slow, stutters or lags

Over Wi-Fi, lower the preview: Advanced › Monitoring › Preview, set VGA and Normal or lower. Prefer 5 GHz; move closer to the camera on its own network. Over USB, set USB Preview Rate to Standard if Maximum stutters. If the phone is hot or in Low Power Mode, the overlays slow down deliberately so the picture does not. For the best picture use USB, or an HDMI capture card on an iPad.

Live View goes black or freezes with "No link"

The connection dropped. Over Wi-Fi the app retries twice, then pauses. Tap Back to Connection and reconnect. If this happens repeatedly on a router, turn off Adaptive Wi-Fi Heartbeat in Advanced › Monitoring › Preview to test, and send logs either way.

The picture looks flat and grey

The camera is recording log (N-Log or R3D) and the LUT is off. Tap the LUT pill, and pick a LUT from the right folder in LOOK: N-Log for N-Log, IPP2 for R3D. See Why log looks flat.

The LUT looks wrong: green, magenta or far too contrasty

The LUT does not match the log curve. An IPP2 or RED Creative LUT on N-Log footage, or an N-Log LUT on R3D, gives exactly this. Choose from the matching folder. If the camera also applies a look on its HDMI output or (RED) in its live stream, that doubles up; set the camera to output log.

The LUT disappears in photo mode

By design. The LUT preview is video only; it returns when the camera goes back to video.

I cannot turn on false color and peaking at the same time

False color, peaking and zebras share one overlay, so one replaces the other. Use zebras plus peaking while rolling, and false color on its own while lighting.

The zebras or false color seem to be at the wrong level

Check the calibration: the tools follow the codec, the ISO and the base ISO, and read the signal under the LUT when Analyze Pre-LUT is on (the default). If you are recording a baked Rec.709 picture, turn Analyze Pre-LUT off. If the LUT name contains "N-Log" the tools assume N-Log, so a mis-named LUT can mislead them.

Focus Punch says "not during RAW"

The camera will not magnify while recording N-RAW, ProRes RAW or R3D. Use Monitor Punch (LOCAL) instead while rolling, or check focus before you record.

Recording will not start

Read the red line under the clock on Controls, or the badge in Live View: no card, card full, format the card, write-protected, switch the camera to video mode, exit zoom on the camera, camera still writing, or a running TIME sequence. The full list is in Controls. On first-generation bodies the app switches the camera into application mode on the first attempt; try again after the tip.

The top bar is cut off or scrolls in landscape

Too many chips for the width. In Advanced › UI › Top Toolbar remove a readout, move one across the GAP, turn on Hide Labels or lower the scale. The fit meter there shows when each group fits.

How do I get the layout back to normal?

Tap SAVE in Live View and apply the Full HUD preset. Reset On-Screen Tool Positions in Advanced › UI returns the floating tools to their anchors.

Tools got dimmer or update slowly while shooting

The phone is hot or in Low Power Mode. The app slows the analysis overlays to keep the picture and the recording going. Get the phone out of the sun or plug it in.

Controls

A tile is grey and I cannot change it

Tap it: the notice tells you why. "Controlled by the camera" means a dial or the exposure mode owns it (aperture in P mode, shutter in A mode). "Set on camera dial" is the mode dial on Z6III, Zf and Z7II. "Not reported" means the body does not expose it over the control link. Many settings lock while recording.

The ISO list is missing values I know the camera has

The list is what the camera allows in the current codec and base ISO. N-Log, HLG and RAW narrow it. Change the base ISO or codec and the list changes.

Can the app set N-Log or HLG for video?

No. The camera does not expose the video tone mode over the control link, so set it on the camera. The app detects N-Log from the codec and calibrates the tools accordingly.

Where is the photo/video switch?

On the camera. The app follows the camera's selector and cannot change it.

Why is there no tint in photo mode?

The tint grid is a movie control. For stills use the camera's white balance fine-tune menu.

Playback

N-RAW or R3D clips do not play

The phone has no decoder for them, so they are listed only when Show RAW video is on and cannot be played. Record a proxy, or review in the editor. Playback handles H.264, H.265 and ProRes.

A clip takes a long time to start

It is streaming into the cache. Large H.265 clips over Wi-Fi buffer for a while; USB 3 is several times faster. Run Test Link Speed in Advanced › Playback: a USB-C cable that classifies as USB 2 is slowing you down. Recently opened clips start instantly from the cache.

Where did my star ratings go in Lightroom?

Ratings, picks and colours are kept on the phone and are not written to the camera files. Use them to narrow the selection and then download the picks.

Save to Photos saved a MOV instead of the original

With the LUT on or a playback speed other than Source, the app renders a copy with those applied. Turn the LUT off and set the speed to Source to save the original file.

Audio and timecode

I cannot hear the camera's audio in headphones

The app shows levels, not sound. Live monitoring of the camera's audio is not available over the control link; monitor on the camera. Clip audio plays back in the player.

Timecode shows --:--:--:--

Rec TC is off, or the camera has not sent the value yet. Turn Rec TC on in Controls › Audio / TC; the value is read from the Live View stream and appears after a moment.

How do I set the timecode to time of day?

Use Timecode Jam-Sync on the Multicam page with Start set to Current; it works with a single camera too. The Controls page can only reset to zero.

Multicam and Remote Viewer

How many cameras can Multicam show?

Layouts go up to eight visible tiles. Over USB, how many bodies a hub can run on an iPhone or iPad is something to test with your hub; two USB bodies have been verified on a Mac.

Remote Viewer cannot find the host

Host and viewers must be on the same Wi-Fi with Local Network permission allowed on both. Tap CAST on the host and check it reads Broadcasting. A venue network that isolates clients will block it; use your own hotspot or router.

Is the timecode jam frame-accurate?

Between Nikon bodies it lines clips up to within a frame or two. Across RED and Nikon the accuracy is not verified. It is a one-time preset over the control link, not genlock.

General

The phone battery drains fast on USB

The camera is charging from the phone. Turn off USB power delivery in the camera's Setup menu, or power the camera from its own battery or a hub.

How do I change the language?

Advanced › UI › Language. System Default follows the phone. If a translation reads oddly, send feedback with the exact wording.

What is the difference between Parallax Monitor and ZR Ctl?

Parallax Monitor is the iPhone and iPad app; ZR Ctl is the Android app. They share the same tools and layout. Remote Viewer works between them.

What should I include when I send logs?

Send them right after the problem, before reconnecting. Add which camera and firmware, which route (USB, hotspot, router, camera Wi-Fi), what you did and what you expected. The report has no photos or video in it.
